A Simple Basic First Aid For Your Dog

If your pet runs into trouble and has an accident that has compromised its health, you need to stay calm and assess the situation. Panic spreads and animals sense that fearful urgency quickly, so your voice, tone and movements need to stay calm to reassure your companion. After all, a dog doesn’t understand what you’re saying, but a dog can certainly understand the sound of your voice. While you reassure your pet, find out as much as you can about its injury or poisoning. What happened and how, and if anything was consumed, how much? The more information you can gather will help you apply some first aid techniques before you can take your dog to a veterinarian.
The same rule of staying calm also applies to the dog, and you should make every effort to try and keep the dog calm while you administer first aid; your efforts will hopefully come to having the dog allow you to treat it. The presence of the dog’s owner can often be a calming influence in an emergency situation. Acting as if you’re calm and collected can also help injured dogs stay calm.
Never assume that your first aid treatment will be enough to get your dog on the road to recovery. While veterinarians can be expensive, a hidden injury or internal bleeding could be even more costly to treat if left untended – your dog could die. Also, the risk of infection for flesh wounds as time passes is very high, and your veterinarian will be able to provide you with antibiotics for your pet. Advise your clinic that you’re on your way with a quick phone call and try to get some fast advice for your pet’s situation. When you do put your dog in your vehicle, lay it on something flat and stable, so your pet doesn’t get bounced around during the car ride.
Early preparation is a godsend, and easier to achieve than you might think. A first aid kit for humans will have more than a few items vital in treating dogs, so keeping a first aid kit in your home helps you, your dog and anyone else you may know that needs emergency care. Knowing when your dog may face a threatening situation can also help. If you’re feeling that a situation might be dangerous for your dog, err on the side of caution and prepare for the worst.
When injured, some dogs become violent or aggressive, requiring that they be restrained with a muzzle to keep them from biting others or resisting treatment. Creating a makeshift muzzle is possible using two to three feet (or 60 to 90 centimeters) of strong cloth. Using the cloth, bind the dog’s jaws together and then tie it behind the dog’s ears. Don’t worry; while your dog may protest noisily by snorting and drooling, it can certainly breathe through its nose despite the wrapping. Other restraints should be used more cautiously, and in emergencies, use only restraints that are absolutely necessary.
Your goal, in an emergency situation with your dog, is to keep it comfortable, stable and alive until a professional veterinarian can apply the proper treatment. This may sound simple, but a hurt and frightened animal can turn your beloved pet into a dog that you can barely recognize, making your job more difficult. Researching possible accidents and how to apply first aid is a responsible way to care for your pet and may just one day save its life.

What’s your favorite, basic recipe? Not toast or grilled cheese, but something relatively simple?
I’m looking for some simple recipes for dinner. Recipes that are basic, use common ingredients, and aren’t that much trouble. I’m looking for something beyond grilled cheese or nuking hot dogs.
Basic soups, chili, casseroles… any would be good… plus anything else you can think of…
I appreciate any and all answers but remember I’m looking for recipes, not just names.
Oh, and remember that I want simple recipes – I don’t have chick peas, coriander, cumin, houmous, etc.
Quisadillas……tortilla, cheese, onion, canned chicken, frying pan!

It’s not glamorous, but it’s easy, and surprisingly nutritious. (I wouldn’t have it for every meal, though.)
Potato with broccoli and cheese
Get a big potato, clean it, poke a few holes in it and microwave it in a bowl for a couple of minutes.
While that’s being done, wash and chop up a handful of broccoli.
Remove the potato from the microwave, and slice it open. If it’s almost cooked, add the broccoli and some cheddar cheese. If it’s still pretty hard, return the potato to the microwave for another minute or so. When the potato is approaching being done, add the toppings and stick it in the microwave. Cook it for about a minute, or until the cheese melts.
Let it cool slightly, add pepper to taste, and enjoy.
I like this recipe because it’s fast and tasty and feels like junk food but isn’t.

This has to be my favorite easy dinner. St Louis Toased Ravioli and Baked Stuffed Mushrooms – My daughter loves it too. Serve with bagged salad if you like. Simple and you can get all items at local grocery store. The taste is even better.
St. Louis Toasted Ravioli-
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 TBS milk
3/4 c italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 pkg frozen meat filled ravioli, thawed
veg oil
grated parmesan
spaghetti or pizza sauce for dipping
Combine egg and milk in small bowl. Place breadcrumbs and salt in separate bowl. Dip each ravioli in egg then breadcrumbs. Deep fry in oil 350* for 1 min per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with parmesan and serve immediately with sauce for dipping.
——————————–while waiting for grease to heat up, prepare these mushrooms. Stick in oven then fry ravioli. Keep your eye on the clock. It doesn’t take long at all. And sooooo easy.
Baked Stuffed Mushroom
8-10 large fresh mushrooms
1 can of crab meat (drained)
1-2 tblsp mayonnaise
1/4 cup (or so) shredded swiss cheese
Cut the stems of the mushrooms and scoop out the centres.
Finely chop stems and centres. Combine the crab meat
and mayo (as you would for tuna salad).
Add whatever seasonings you like (salt and pepper are fine)
to taste. Add in chopped stems and centres. Add in cheese.
Stuff into mushroom cups and place under the broiler 5-7 min.

This is my favorite easy "recipe" –
1 box Zatarains Spanish Rice mix
1/2 lb ground sausage or hamburger
1/2 an onion, chopped, not minced
1-3 cloves garlic, minced (depending on your taste – I LOVE garlic)
1 can diced jalepeno tomatoes
Cook meat, garlic, and onions in your pot, drain any grease, then dump the rice, tomatoes and water into the pot, and cook according to directions. Dinner in a 1/2 hour… and man it’s tasty (especially if you like spice – hot italian sausage is great in it, and I like to add a splash of tobasco), plus you get your meat, starch, and veggies in one dish.
Or – really easy scalloped potatoes….
1 small ham steak, cut into cubes
3 medium white or red potatoes, peeled and sliced pretty thin
1 can not condensed cream of mushroom soup (I like progresso)
-parmesan cheese
-some milk
-flour & butter
optional – thinly sliced onions, carrots, or mushrooms
Spray a glass baking dish with cooking spray, and add a layer of potatoes. Cut a bit of butter over the top, sprinkle with flour (this will help it thicken up, but it’s optional), then sprinkle with parm cheese. Add a layer of ham, a layer of veggies if you want, then more potatoes, more ham & veggies, and more potatoes, and more cheese! Pour the can of soup over it all, then add enough milk so everything is covered. Bake for an hour (at least – if your potatoes are cut thicker, it will take longer) at 400. It’s really hot too – so let it cool for a good 5-10 minutes after you take it out.
Chili, soups and stews are all pretty easy too.
I make sausage & potato soup by browning 1/2 lb sausage, some crumbled bacon (real bacon bits/peices work just as well), garlic, and onions, leeks, or green onions, then adding 2-3 cups chicken broth (or easier – 2-3 cups water and 2-3 chicken bullion cubes), and 2-3 diced potatoes. Cook for an hour or so on medium-low, stirring frequently, and adding more water when necessary. The potatoes will cook themselves off into the soup, making it really thick. At the end, add a few splashes of half & half or cream to give it a little extra flavor.
For some reason, this is especially good with crumbled feta cheese (or any cheese – even sprinkle some parmesan cheese over it) added to the bowl before eating. Sounds bizzare, but it’s my favorite soup ever.
Good luck! There are lots of ways to spice up simple rice or pasta mixes by adding veggies and meat, and they make for quick and easy dinners.

My favorite fritatta: very fast and delicious, I usually make it from leftovers. Ingredients are not strict and can be substituted for the stuff you have. The dish takes only like 20 minutes to prapare (even though my description is not succinct
)
Cookware needed:
around 10 inch oven-safe frying pan (any without plastic parts will do)
small sauce pan or pot
Ingredients needed:
a splash of oil
a big potato
cooked sausage or any cooked meat, chopped (around 1/2-1cup)
1/2 can of green beans
1/2 cup of ketchup or leftover pasta sauce (optional)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
any sliced (4-5slices) or grated (1/2-3/4 cups) cheese
salt and pepper
Preparation: slice the potato thinly, dump into the saucepan, cover with water, add salt. Bring to boil and boil for 5 minutes, then drain (if your potatoe is cooked, skip the boiling, just slice it).
Add a splash of oil to the frying pan and turn the heat to high. Distribute the potato slices on the bottom, then spread the sausage or meat and green beans on top. Pour on the ketchup or pasta sauce if using. Pour the beaten eggs on top, season with salt and pepper. Cover with sliced or grated cheese (remember, while you are doing all this, the pan is on high heat and potatoes are browning).
Once covered with cheese, put the pan in the oven under a broiler for 7 min or until cheese gets bubbly.
Take out from the oven, let rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting.
Hope you like it!

A dinner we enjoy is simply a hamburger steak (lean ground hamburger), your favorite Rice or Pasta Roni (directions on the box), a canned veggie (we like peas or green beans) heated in the microwave, and possibly a green salad with your favorite dressing.
If you’re looking for something beyond this, I have a killer recipe for spaghetti.
#1 ground beef
1small can tomato sauce
1 can tomato soup
1 pkg Lawrey’s Original Spaghetti Sauce Mix
1 small can mushrooms (optional)
Start cooking your favorite spaghetti (or linguini) in salted water. While this is cooking, brown your beef. Add tomato sauce, tomato soup, Lawery’s mix, and mushrooms. Cover and simmer until spaghetti is ready.
When serving, sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese or a blend of cheeses.
If the sauce is too thick for you, just add water. This is even better as a leftover!
Hope I have been of some help. It’s hard working with just the basics. Good luck!! And Merry Christmas!

I like to make a chicken chili. It’s great, because most of the ingredients are canned or are things you have in the fridge anyway, so it comes together super-fast.
I use-
1 onion, chopped and sauteed in butter or olive oil
2 (or more) chicken breasts, cooked and chopped
3 cans beans, undrained (I like to use northern beans, but you can use whatever you like)
2 cans diced tomatoes, undrained (If you like spicy things, you can use the kind with jalepenos)
1 can chicken broth
You basically toss everything in a pot and cook it until it’s all hot. You can also customize it with whatever else you may have on hand- minced garlic, sauteed green peppers, mushrooms, canned corn, canned green chilies, etc.
I like to serve it with shredded cheese and cornbread. (I make my cornbread from the boxed mix.) It all takes less than half an hour, and you have leftovers that taste even better the next day!
